McNeese run rules Lamar 14-4, advances to SLC Championship game

HAMMOND, La. - Elliot Hebert and Peyton LeJeune's home runs in the first inning ignited a 7-run frame and set the tone in McNeese to a 14-4 run rule victory over top-seeded Lamar in the second meeting between the two teams in as many days at the 2024 Southland Conference Baseball Tournament here Saturday afternoon.

The victory advanced the No. 5 Cowboys (32-26) to their fourth tournament title game in the last five seasons where they'll take in No. 2 Nicholls at 6 p.m. Saturday night. Lamar fell to 44-15 on the season and now just wait to see if it'll receive an at-large berth to the NCAA Tournament when the brackets are announced on Monday. 

Conner Westenburg drove in the first two runs of the ballgame with a single to right center for the early 2-0 lead for the Cowboys. Hebert, a senior, drove in the next two runs with a shot out to left center to put the Pokes in an early 4-0 advantage. With redshirt senior Chase Keeton on base, LeJeune, a senior, hit his fourth two-run home run of the tournament, the second most in the 2024 tournament behind River Orsak with seven. The Pokes concluded the first inning with a 7-0 lead.

McNeese went on to plate one run in the third, two in the fourth, and finally four in the seventh to finish off the game. Lamar plated four runs between the first and third innings.

The title game pits the Cowboys against Nicholls at 6 p.m. at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field as the Colonels look to defend their 2023 SLC Tournament Championship. In addition to the Cowboys' fourth appearance in five years, the Pokes took home the ultimate hardware in 2019 and 2021 to make the NCAA Tournament.

The winner of tonight's game will go dancing in the NCAA Baseball Tournament with the regional site to be announced Monday at 10 a.m.
