Cowgirls overcome Tigers for first victory of 2024



LAKE CHARLES, La. – McNeese Soccer withstood a late attack by Jackson State to claim its first victory of the 2024 season 2-1 at Cowgirl Field Sunday afternoon.

The Pitch Side:
• McNeese was narrowly out shot 10-7 with the Tigers owning seven shots on goal as the Cowgirls collected five.
• Jackie Kelly posted six shots in the net compared to the Tigers' three.
• Both squads got competitive during the 90 minutes on the pitch with four yellow cards each.
• The Cowgirls earned their first victory two matches in after having to wait four matches in 2023.
• All three goals were scored in the first half of the duel followed by a scoreless half.
• Three Cowgirls have netted a goal this season, the first being Morgan Schooley against UL-Lafayette.
• Five Pokes played all 90 minutes on the pitch, up from three during Thursday's match.
• Kendyl Terrell of JSU earned her second goal of the season in as many matches.
 
How It Happened:
• Kaile Kukaua earned her first goal of the season (eighth in her career) to put the Pokes up 1-0 in the eighth minute of action, assisted by Alexi Pitt.
• JSU's Kendyl Terrell scored in the 34th minute of action to bring the game to a draw off an assist from Kyla Gomez.
• Isabelle Smith made her first goal of the season meaningful, ultimately being the game-winning goal off a dish from Cass Romero.
 
Next up: The Cowgirls take to the road to challenge Oral Roberts on Thursday, August 22 in Oklahoma.
