LAKE CHARLES-- McNeese women's basketball ended its three-game homestand with a 68-52 loss to Lamar Saturday, dropping the Cowgirls to 7-10 overall and 2-5 in conference play. Lamar improved to 12-4 overall and remained undefeated in the SLC at 7-0.
Paris Guillory led the Cowgirls in scoring with 22 points. Fifteen of Guillory's points came from behind the arc where she was 4 for 8. Guillory has now scored in double figures in all nine games since joining the team in early December.
Lamar placed three players in double figures with Akasha Davis and R'Mani Taylor leading all players with 20 points apiece. Jacei Denley chipped in with 10 points.
McNeese struggled from the field, shooting 38.5 (20-52) percent which included five three-pointers.
Lamar ended the game shooting 43.8 percent (28-64) and narrowly outrebounded McNeese 38-32.
The Cardinals held a 38-24 halftime lead and held as much as a 16-point lead with less than four minutes left in the half.
The Cowgirls shot 34.6 percent (9 of 26) from the field while the Cardinals shot 53.6 percent (15 of 28) and scored 22 of their 38 points in the paint in the half.
McNeese trailed 57-30 with 3:46 left in the third quarter but 12-0 run by the Cowgirls that lasted three minutes cut the Lamar lead to 15 points (57-42).
An old fashion three-point play by
Mireia Yespes with 2:56 left in the game cut the Cowgirl lead to 12 points. Lamar responded with an old-fashion three-point play on its next possession to put the Lamar lead back to 15 points (65-50).
