LAKE CHARLES--  McNeese women's tennis began its 2025 season by splitting its matches over the weekend, falling 7-0 at North Texas on Friday in its season opener before bouncing back with a 6-1 win at UT-Tyler Saturday.  

"I am very happy with our performance this weekend," said first year head coach Sonia Carlson.  "We competed well on Friday against a strong North Texas team and fell just a bit short.  We were able to bounce back quickly and bring it on Saturday to get our first win of the season.  I am very proud of our freshmen Salome (Fluri) and Toffee (Ghorab) for picking up their first career wins.  Very happy for sophomore transfers Ana (Hollweg) and Erica (Hagi), who both saved match points down to also secure their first wins as Cowgirls.

"Our lone senior, Ariane (Monlleo Sanchis) was outstanding all weekend and set the standards very high for our team.  I am incredibly proud of this group, and I'm excited we get to play home next Saturday in front of our fans."
 
McNeese (1-1) picked up the doubles point against UT-Tyler with wins at No. 2 (Erica Hagi/Ariane Monlleo-Sanchis) and No. 3 (Ana Hollweg/Toffee Ghorab) to take the early 1-0 lead. 
 
Freshmen Salome Fluri and Toffee Ghorab picked up their first career singles matches.  Fluri defeated Carla Rodier 6-2, 6-3 at the top singles position and Ghorab defeated Elisa Buhagiar in straight sets 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6 singles.
 
Also picking up singles wins for the Cowgirls was Erica Hagi at No. 2, Ana Hollweg at No. 3, and Ariane Monlleo-Sanchis at No. 4.  It's also the first wins for Hagi and Hollweg as Cowgirls.
 
Hagi defeated Allison Schwartz 6-2, 5-7, 12-10, Hollweg fought her way back after dropping the first set to defeat Natalia Gorzny 4-6, 6-3, 12-10.  Sanchis, the lone senior on the team, defeated Kanika Sivaraman in straight sets 6-1, 6-3.
 
The Cowgirls are schedule to travel to Prairie View on Wednesday for a doubleheader beginning at 10 a.m.  McNeese will host Dillard on Saturday, Jan. 25 in its home opener.
