WBB: Cowgirls Come From Behind To Defeat Islanders

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas— McNeese women's basketball regrouped from a poor shooting first half and outscored Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 42-26 in the second half in its 59-54 come from behind Southland Conference win Monday afternoon.
 
The win snapped a four-game losing streak and it also marked the first win over the Islanders since 2022 and the first win in Corpus Christi since 2011.
 
With the game tied at 53 all with 48 seconds left, Guillory's layup with 26 seconds gave McNeese a 55-53 lead then Guillory extended the Cowgirls lead to 57-53 with two free throws with 11 seconds left.  The Islanders scored another point on one of two free throws before two more free throws by Guillory with four seconds to seal the win. 
 
Guillory scored the Cowgirls' final eight points of the game, ending with a game high 18 points.  Boston Berry came off the bench to score 13 points which included 3 of 4 from three-point range.
 
The Cowgirls also won the rebound battle, outrebounding the Islanders 45-39.  Sydney McQuietor led all players with a career high 11 boards. 
 
After shooting 16.0 percent (4 of 25) from the field in the first half, McNeese shot 40.6 percent in the second half on 13 of 32 from the field.
 
McNeese (8-12, 3-6 SLC) missed its first 10 shots of the game and things didn't get any better in the second quarter as the Cowgirls ended the first half 4 of 25 from the field.  Three of the four Cowgirls field goals made were three-pointers.
 
Wilnie Joseph scored the Cowgirls first two points of the game on a layup with 1:44 left in the first quarter. The Cowgirls ended the quarter 2 of 12 from the field but only trailed by seven points.
 
The Cowgirls shooting woes continued in the second quarter where they made 2 of 13 from the field with both field goals coming from behind the arc. 
 
One bright spot in the first half was at the free throw line where McNeese was 6 of 8 but trailed 28-17.
 
McNeese opened the second half on an 8-0 run to cut the Islander lead to three and ended the quarter by outscoring the Islanders 26-15 in the third quarter to head into the final quarter all tied at 43 apiece.
 
The Cowgirls took their first lead of the game (49-47) on two free throws by Paris Guillory with 5:31 to play.  Two free throws by Kyla Davis with 4:16 put the Cowgirls up 51-47 lead, its largest of the game.
 
TAMU-CC went on a 4-0 scoring run to tie the game 51 all but a Guillory layup gave McNeese a 53-51 lead with 2:22 to play.
 
The Islanders placed three players in double figures with Mireia Qguado leading with 13 points.
