BEAUMONT, Texas – The McNeese Cowgirls (4-12-4, 3-5-2) left everything on the field Tuesday afternoon, taking regular-season champion and No. 1 seed Northwestern State (13-4-3, 7-2-1) into overtime before falling 1–0 in a heartbreaking finish in the opening round of the Southland Conference Championship.
From the opening whistle, the Cowgirls' defense made things difficult for the top-seeded Demons. McNeese limited Northwestern State to six shots in the first half while battling to a 0–0 tie at the break. Despite seven fouls being called in a physical first half, the Cowgirls matched the Demons' energy and organization on both ends of the field.
In the second half, McNeese continued to show defensive discipline, holding off a surge of Northwestern State pressure. The Cowgirls managed two shots after the break, while the Demons generated 13, but neither side could find the back of the net through 90 minutes, forcing overtime.
The Cowgirls continued to defend valiantly in the extra period, keeping Northwestern State off the board until the final seconds. With five seconds remaining, the Demons' Madison Murphy found Kendall Hemperley, who scored the golden goal for a 1–0 decision.
