SAN ANTONIO – UIW's Marcus Glover scored on a put-back off a missed free throw with 7.7 left to give the Cardinals a 69-67 lead, then McNeese's final attempt to tie the game on a layup by
Tyshawn Archie fell off the mark and UIW escaped with a 71-67 upset win over the Cowboys.
UIW made two free throws with one second left to seal the win.
The loss snapped McNeese's five-game winning streak as it falls to 6-2 overall and 0-1 in league play. UIW improved to 5-3 and 1-0,
McNeese returns home on Friday night when it hosts Northwestern State at 6:30.
Garwey Dual led McNeese with a career-high 18 points behind 8 of 10 shooting.
Javohn Garcia scored 13 points, 11 of those in the second half, and
DJ Richards Jr. finished with 12.
UIW, which outscored McNeese 24-9 from three-point range, was paced by Davion Bailey's 29 points behind eight three-pointers made. Jordan Pyke added 17 points, getting nine of those from the free throw line.
McNeese trailed the entire game until a steal and layup by Garcia gave the Cowboys a 67-66 lead with 29.5 seconds to play.
The Cowboys appeared to have turned the Cardinals over to reclaim the ball with nine seconds to play, but a foul was called on Dual that sent Pyke to the free throw line for a 1-and-1. Pyke made the first to tie the game but missed the second. That's when Glover sprung free to get the offensive rebound and putback to put UIW ahead 69-67.
Having to go the full length of the court, Archie took the inbounds pass and sprinted untouched until he reached the goal where he was met by a defender that forced up an off-balanced shot. The tip in was missed and UIW corralled the rebound and drew a foul with one second remaining.
McNeese connected on 49 percent from the field, hitting 25 of 51 shots while UIW made 23 of 51 for (45 percent). UIW made 8 of 21 from three-point range, all eight coming from the hands of Bailey, while McNeese hit 3 of 15 attempts.
The Cardinals out-rebounded McNeese 30-23 and scored 16 points from 11 offensive rebounds.
