Cowgirls rally for 6-4 win over UT Arlington

LAKE CHARLES – Cassidy Chance's two-run double in the fourth inning tied the game at 3-3 then Reese Reyna's go-ahead RBI single in the fifth broke the tie while her run later in the inning off a Brylie Fontenot, two-run double-squeeze play gave McNeese some cushion and the Cowgirls went on to defeat UT Arlington 6-4 at Cowgirl Field on Thursday night.

Maddie Taylor came out of the bullpen to throw 4.1 superb innings to pick up her second win of the season, holding the Mavs to one run and just two hits while striking out three to run her record to 2-0 on the year.

The win improved McNeese's record to 4-2 on the season as head coach James Landreneau picked up career win No. 302 with his next victory making him the all-time winningest coach in school history, surpassing Scott Eastman who amassed 302 wins from 1993-2004.

The Cowgirls finished with six hits in the game, four of those going for doubles. Munoz had two of those as she finished 2 for 3 at the plate with a run scored. Reyna had a hit, RBI and scored two runs while Chance and Rylie Bouvier each recorded a double.

UT Arlington (4-2) scored the first three runs, all coming off the bat of Kaitlyn Sailor who popped two home runs in the game, a solo shot in the first inning and a two-run blast in the third to put the Mavs up 3-0.

McNeese threatened in the first but left runners stranded at second and third and repeated the situation in the third inning. But the Cowgirls broke through in the fourth to tie the game then added three more in the fifth inning to build the lead.

In the fifth inning, Jada Munoz hit a one-out double down the left field line and Bouvier followed with a walk.

Reyna followed with a go-ahead single to right field that scored Munoz while Bouvier advanced to third and the Cowgirls led 4-3. Reyna stole second and Fontenot laid down a squeeze bunt that scored both Bouvier and Reyna, who scored from second on the sac bunt.

The Mavs added a run in the top of the seventh and had a runner on base with Sailor up as the tying run, but Taylor got her to groundout to second base to end the game.

The Cowgirls will be back in action on Friday night when they host 6th-ranked Tennessee in a doubleheader beginning at 5 on the first day of the I-10 Classic.
