LAKE CHARLES-- McNeese softball went 2-0 on the first day of the Cowgirl Classic in come from behind fashion, defeating Houston 6-2 before closing the day with a run-rule 10-1 (5 inning) win over Kansas City to improve to 9-4 on the season. The Cowgirls will play Kansas City at 12 p.m. Sunday in the final game of the tournament.
On the day, the Cowgirls scored 16 runs on 16 hits including six extra base hits.
The Cougars (9-3) took advantage of a few early Cowgirl miscues in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead then added a single run in the third for a 2-0 lead.
McNeese rallied to score all six runs in the sixth inning to take the lead.
Onna McElroy's first collegiate grand slam ignited the Cowgirl offense who went on to score two more runs on a
Kassidy Chance RBI double and a RBI single by
Samantha Mundine for the final run of the game.
Maddie Taylor picked up the win in relief of
Kadence Williams to improve to 4-1 on the season. Taylor tossed the final four shutout innings of the game and gave up only three hits with one walk and three strikeouts.
In the win over Kansas City, the Roos also took the early lead over the Cowgirls by scoring one run in the first for a 1-0 lead. McNeese took a 2-1 leads in the second inning off a RBI by
Sarah Allen then Chance came home to score the go ahead run on an error.
McNeese blew the game open in the fourth inning by scoring eight runs on five hits to put the run-rule in effect. In the inning, the Cowgirls had three straight doubles with one each coming from
Alexis Dibbley,
Jada Muñoz, and
Rylie Bouvier. Dibbley's double was a three RBI bases clearing double that gave McNeese a 7-1 lead.
Ryann Schexnayder improved to 2-0 on the season with the one-hitter complete game. She struck out four and walked three.
