Mireia Yespes delivered a double double on Senior Day in Saturday's 69-60 women's basketball Southland Conference win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi that keeps the Cowgirls Southland Conference Tournament hopes alive.
The win, which was the first conference home win for McNeese, gives the Cowgirls (10-18, 5-12 SLC) the tiebreaker over the Islanders should both teams tie for the eighth and final spot in the tournament.
Yespes led all players with a season high 21 points and added 11 rebounds. Senior
Kiayra Ellis was the only other Cowgirl to score in double figures with 11 points.
The Cowgirls came out firing on all cylinders and held a 17-12 first half lead with a 54.5 field goal percent, making six of 11 attempts from the field.
McNeese continued to extend its lead, outscoring the Islanders 20-11 in the quarter and held a 37-23 halftime lead.
At the half, McNeese shot 56.0 percent (14 of 25) from the field including a 55.6 three-point field goal percent, making five of nine attempts.
The Islanders (13-15, 5-12 SLC) cut into the Cowgirl lead in the third quarter by outscoring McNeese 13-8.
McNeese held as much as a 20-point lead with 3:53. The Islanders went on a run and got as close as seven points with 52 seconds left in the game but a layup by Yespes with 25 seconds and two free throws by
Paris Guillory with 12 seconds sealed the win.
