LAKE CHARLES – Playing shorthanded with a quarter of the team shelved, including three starters, due to an illness and facing a Louisiana-Lafayette squad who just took two out of three games against nationally ranked Nebraska, McNeese's Cowboy committee shone strong for the baseball program, fanning 16 batters against the Cajuns in a 3-0 victory at Joe Miller Ballpark in the Battle of I-10.
The Cowboys improve to 6-1 on the season to mark the best start skipper
Justin Hill has had at the helm despite being short-handed several players out due to illness Tuesday night. The Cajuns fall to an even 4-4 record on the year.
Freshman
Diego Corrales made his collegiate debut, throwing two innings and fanning three batters in the outing. Redshirt senior
Marcus Mott picked up his second collegiate victory for the Cowboys as senior
Sergio Lopez collected his second save of the season.
Eight pitchers combined for 16 strikeouts for McNeese, marking a season high and fifth game of the 2025 campaign with 10 or more strikeouts.
Offensively, the Pokes struck first in the third inning when junior
Matt Stancliff hit an RBI double to drive in freshman
Bryce Fontenot for a 1-0 lead. Two innings later in the bottom of the fifth,
Marcus Heusohn (senior) drove in two more runs on a single as Fontenot scored his second run and Stancliff his first.
McNeese remains at home this weekend as it opens conference play against Nicholls starting on Friday, February 28 through March 2.
