OXFORD, Miss.--- McNeese softball couldn't get the timely hit in its 4-0 loss at Ole Miss Wednesday night in the first of six road games in five days for the Cowgirls.
With the loss, McNeese falls to 10-5 on the season while Ole Miss improves to 13-3. The Cowgirls will remain on the road to take part in the Jane B. Moore Memorial this weekend that will be hosted by Auburn.
McNeese had opportunities to score in the first inning when
Kassidy Chance led the game off with a double down the left field line then went to second on bunt single by
Samantha Mundine putting runners on the corners with no outs. The Cowgirls couldn't get the timely hit as
Alexis Dibbley went down looking,
Jada Muñoz popped up to the catcher and
Rylie Bouvier went down swinging to leave the runners stranded.
Ole Miss took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a two-run homerun by Aliyah Binford, her first of the season.
Ole Miss added two more insurance runs in the fourth inning on a two RBI double to left center by Taylor Roman for a 4-0 lead.
McNeese threatened to score again in the fifth inning when
Reese Reyna led the inning off with a double to left followed by a single to center by
Brylie Fontenot. After an
Onna McElroy strikeout,
Rylee Eyster reached on an error to load the bases.
Once again, McNeese didn't get the timely hit as Chance flew out to left for the second out and Mundine popped up to second base to end the threat.
McNeese was only able to get three more runners on base in the final two innings. Muñoz singled, Rylee Bouvier was hit by a pitch in the sixth, and Chance drew a two out walk in the seventh.
The Cowgirls ended the game with seven hits including doubles by Chance and Reyna.
Ryann Schexnayder fell to 2-1 on the season with the loss after allowing two runs on four hits in 2.0 innings.
Maddie Taylor allowed the other two runs on three hits in relief of Schexnayder.
Kadence Williams tossed the final two innings and gave up one hit.
Ole Miss picked up eight hits on the night including four extra base hits. Miali Guachino picked up the shutout win to improve to 7-3 on the year. Guachino ended the game with 10 strikeouts. After giving up the first two hits to start the game, Guachino retired the next 12 Cowgirls in order.
