SB: Cowgirls split SLC Opening DH At Lamar

BEAUMONT, Texas--McNeese softball split its Southland Conference opening doubleheader at Lamar Friday, winning the opener 6-5 then dropped the nightcap 7-0.  The teams will finish the series with a 12 p.m. rubber game Saturday.  The game will stream on ESPN+.
 
McNeese (13-11, 1-1 SLC) scored the first run of the game in its first at on a two out double by Jada Muñoz that scored Nyjah Fontenot.
 
Lamar (12-10, 1-1 SLC) tied the game 1-1 in the bottom of the first inning with a two out single.
 
McNeese scored five runs in the next three innings to extend its lead to 6-1. A two out single up the middle by Kassidy Chance in the second inning scored Brylie Fontenot the 2-1 McNeese lead.
 
The Cowgirls tacked on three more runs on four hits and took advantage of one Lamar error to lead 5-1.  Nyjah Fontenot scored on an error, Muñoz scored on a single by Reese Reyna, and Rylie Bouvier scored on a fielder's choice.
 
A sacrifice fly by Nyjah Fontenot in the fourth scored Samantha Mundine for a 6-1 lead. Mundine led the inning off with a triple.
 
Lamar cut the lead in half with two runs in the fifth on three hits and a Cowgirl error then plated two more runs in the sixth to pull to within one run.
 
In the bottom of the seventh, Lamar got the tying run on base with two outs off the third Cowgirl error of the game, but reliever Kadence Williams got Ava Blakey to ground out to Muñoz at third to end the game.
 
McNeese picked up 10 hits in the game including two extra base hits, a double by Muñoz and a triple by Mundine.  Muñoz ended the game with a 3 for 4 plate appearance to lead the Cowgirls.
 
Ryann Schexnayder improves to 3-1 with the win while Williams picks up her second save of the season.
 
In the nightcap, Lamar scored four unearned runs in the second inning on four hits, two errors along with two wild pitches to take a 4-0 lead.  Two more runs on four hits in the fourth extended the Cardinals lead to 6-0 with the final run of the game coming in the sixth.
 
Lamar ended the game with 11 hits and the Cowgirls with five hits.  Nyjah Fontenot picked up two of the five Cowgirl hits.  Reese Reyna, Sarah Allen and Delaney Dunham picked up the other three hits.  Allen and Dunham's hit was a double.
 
Alexis Dibbley fell to 2-2 on the season after allowing four unearned runs on four hits with one strikeout and one walk in 1 1/3 innings.
 
McNeese Notes
• The win against Lamar in game one was the 22nd straight win over the Cardinals
• The loss in game two snapped a 22-game winning streak.  The last Lamar win over McNeese before today was a 6-1 win in the opening game of the SLC series on April 21, 2017.
• McNeese picked up 10 hits in the first game and five in the second game.
Nyjah Fontenot has picked up at least one hit in eight of the last nine games
• McNeese committed six errors on the day, three in each game
Ryann Schexnayder improved to 3-1 on the season with the first game win
