LAKE CHARLES--- McNeese softball played No. 5 LSU to a scoreless game through four and a half innings and held a 2-0 lead after the fifth inning, but LSU scored 12 runs over the final two innings to defeat the Cowgirls 12-2 in front of a sold out crowd of 1,459 at Cowgirl Diamond Tuesday night.
McNeese (23-16), who stranded 10 baserunners in the game, had several opportunities to score early in the game but couldn't get the timely hit.
After the Cowgirls went down in order in the first inning, McNeese had runners in scoring position in the next three innings including a runner on third.
Nyjah Fontenot was stranded on third in the second inning after a one out walk.
Jada Muñoz was stranded on second and
Samantha Mundine was left on the bases in the third and
Brylie Fontenot was left on second in the fourth before the Cowgirls broke a scoreless game with two runs in the fifth.
Rylie Bouvier's two RBI single down the right field line in the fifth scored Kassidy Chancy and
Reese Reyna for the 2-0 lead.
LSU (32-4) came alive in the sixth by scoring six runs on seven hits including a three-run homerun by Tori Edwards and a two-run homerun by Maddox McKee. The Tigers matched that scoring output with six more runs in the seventh inning on six hits including a two-run homerun by McKenzie Redoutey and RBI doubles by Jadyn Laneaux and Avery Hodge.
The scoring outburst overshadowed a solid pitching performance by the Cowgirls'
Kadence Williams who was on the losing end after allowing three runs on three hits in 5 1/3 innings. The loss drops Williams to 6-6 on the season.
Maddie Taylor allowed three runs on four hits in 1/3 of an innings and
Ryann Schexnayder allowed six runs on seven hits in the final 1 1/3 innings.
Jayden Heavener improved to 10-2 on the year with the complete game win. Heavener allowed two runs on three hits, walked nine and struck out eight.
McNeese will return to Southland Conference action this weekend when the Cowgirls travel to Hammond for a three-game series against Southeastern beginning with a 4 p.m. doubleheader on Friday.
