Hot shooting Cowboys roll past Lions, 97-54




COMMERCE, Texas – Javohn Garcia and DJ Richards Jr. combined to sink 10 of McNeese's season-high 14 three-pointers and the Cowboys recorded its second-best night shooting the ball away from home, rolling to a 97-54 win over East Texas A&M here Saturday afternoon.
 
The win marked the third straight victory for the Cowboys as they improve to 21-5 overall and 14-3 in Southland Conference play. ETAM fell to 10-17 and 5-12.
 
Garcia led all scorers with 21 points, his second 20-point game of the season and the 11th in his career. He connected on 8 of 12 from the floor, including knocking down a career-high five 3-pointers in eight attempts.
 
Richards Jr. added 15 points and made 5 of 8 from long range for a season-high makes from behind the arc.
 
Garwey Dual contributed with 14 points while Peitok Machar added nine points and nine rebounds, and Larry Johnson with nine points.
 
McNeese dished out 19 assists on 36 makes and shot 54.5 percent (36-66) from the field including 14 of 31 for 45.2 percent from three-point land. The Cowboys shot 22 of 35 of their two-point attempts for 63 percent.
 
Defensively, the Cowboys turned the Lions over 15 times and scored 30 points off the miscues. ETAM shot just 34.6 percent (18-52) for the game and only 20.7 percent (6-29) from long range.
 
McNeese led 45-29 at the half, using a 14-2 run over a five-minute span to open up a 16-15 lead into a 31-17 margin with 8:57 to play in the half.
 
Garcia ignited the Cowboys in the second half by connecting on back-to-back 3s in 31 second span to increase the lead from 45-32 to 51-32 at the 18:45 mark.
 
Not to be outdone by his road roommate, Richards Jr. caught fire from long range, hitting 3 of 4 in the second half to help add to the lead.
 
McNeese held a 36-29 rebounding advantage, scored 36 points in the paint, 26 fast break points, and 44 points off the bench.
 
The Cowboys will next play at Northwestern State on Monday night at 6:30.
