MOBILE, Ala.—McNeese softball scored runs in three of the first four inning to pick up a 5-2 win over South Alabama Wednesday night, its second straight win in as many days over a Sun Belt opponent to improve to 9-4 overall. McNeese picked up an 8-6 win at Southern Miss on Tuesday.
South Alabama falls to 7-5 with the loss.
McNeese took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning on a solo homerun by
Corine Poncho, her second of the season.
It didn't take long for South Alabama to get on the board as the Jaguars scored two runs in the bottom of the second with one run coming on a RBI single and the other run off a pass ball for a 2-1 lead.
McNeese responded with two runs in the third with one run scoring on a bases loaded walk by
Jada Muñoz and the other run scoring on a bases loaded ground out double play to short by Poncho that scored
Rylee Cloud for a 3-2 lead.
The Cowgirls extended their lead to 5-2 in the fourth inning by adding with two more runs. A sacrifice fly by
Nyjah Fontenot scored
Malayna Daigle and a RBI double up the middle by
Rylee Cloud scored
Maddie Weeks. McNeese missed an opportunity to score more runs after leaving the bases loaded.
Sophomore
Maddie Taylor improved to 4-0 with the win. Maddie was solid in the circle, allowing two runs off six hits, and four strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings. Freshman
Brookelyn Taylor pick up her second save of the season, tossing the final 1 2/3 innings.
After Maddie allowed two runs in the second inning, she held South Alabama scoreless for the next 3 1/3 innings before giving way to Brookelyn who allowed only one hit in seven batters faced in the final 1 2/3 innings.
McNeese will return home to host the Cajun AC Louisiana Clash, Feb. 20-22.
