Lake Charles – McNeese Cowboys (2-3) dropped game one of their three game series against Kansas (3-2), 11-2, on Friday at Joe Miller Ballpark.
The Jayhawks got a superb performance from starting pitcher Dominic Voegele who held the Cowboys hitless through four innings while the Kansas offense built a 4-0 lead.
McNeese got its first hit in the bottom of the fifth when
Kaden Schuck doubled to advance
Bryce Fontenot to third who had reached courtesy of hit-by-pitch.
Matt Stancliff then hit a sacrifice fly out to left field to score Fontenot and advance Schuck. The very next batter was
Danny Barbero who singled to left center to drive in Schuck from third to cut the deficit to 5-2.
But the Cowboys managed only two more hits the rest of the game as the Jayhawks added two runs in the top of the sixth when Tyson Leblanc hit a two-run blast to bring in Augusto Mungarrieta.
Kansas put the game away with four runs in the ninth to go up 11-2 beginning with a double down the left field line by Max Soliz Jr. and Cade Baldridge scoring on a wild pitch. Soliz Jr. would then come in to score on another wild pitch followed by Dariel Osoria flying out to left field to bring in Tyson Owens.
Voegele finished the game with six innings pitched, giving up two runs on two hits, walked three and struck out four in picking up the win.
McNeese starter
