WBB: Cowgirls Clinch Outright Regular Season Title On Senior Day

LAKE CHARLES—  McNeese women's basketball secured the outright Southland Conference regular season title and the SLC Tournament's no. 1 seed Saturday with a 75-55 win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (5-21, 4-15 SLC) on Senior Day to extend its winning streak to a program best 17 games and improved to 24-4 overall and 18-1 in the SLC.  It's the third SLC regular season title in program history and the first one since 2011.

Seniors Arianna Patton and Jalencia Pierre led McNeese in scoring with 21 and 13 points, respectively.  Pierre scored her 1,000th career point with 4:21 left in the first quarter to cut the Islander lead to one point (10-9). Patton tied her career high with five three-pointers, she was 5 of 10 from behind the arc.

 After a slow start the Cowgirls' offense started clicking midway through the second quarter and held a 39-28 halftime lead, holding the Islanders to nine second quarter points.  The Cowgirl defense held the Islanders to three points in the final 4:52 of the half.
The Cowgirls held its largest lead of the game of 23 points on a layup by Averi Berry with 6:32 to play.

McNeese scored 40 points off 30 Texas A&M-CC turnovers and scored 23 fastbreak points.
The Islanders were led by Marissa Shelton's 20 points.

The Cowgirls shot 43.3 percent from the field, connecting on 26 of 60 attempts.  After hitting all 16 free throws on Thursday, McNeese followed that by making 14 of 18 Saturday.  McNeese was 6 of 15 from three-point land.

• Senior Jalencia Pierre scored her 1,000th career point with 4:21 left in the first quarter
• Seniors Lexi Alexander, Jalencia Pierre, Adrianna Patton, Alasia Washington, Kaili Chamberlin, Monique Joseph, and manager Andrew Mitchell were honored following the game
