Is McNeese Men's Basketball the Gonzaga of the South?
Â
It's hard to argue against it. The numbers are proof.
Â
McNeese claimed its third-straight Southland Conference Tournament championship with a convincing win over Stephen F. Austin on Wednesday in front of a sellout and record crowd of 5,272 inside the Townsley Law Arena.
Â
The win clinched the program's third-consecutive bid to the NCAA Tournament, where the Cowboys lassoed their first-ever postseason win last year over Clemson in the first round.
Â
Why the Gonzaga of the South?
Â
McNeese is the only mid-major team south of the 45-degree longitude line that will be making it third-straight NCAA Tournament appearance. In fact, only two mid-major schools have a longer streak – Colgate of the Patriot League and Gonzaga, the gold standard of mid-majors who has become a national powerhouse year-in and year-out and who will make their 27
th straight appearance next week.
Â
Now let's tie in the numbers to solidify the proof.
Â
Over the last three years McNeese has compiled a won-loss record of 86-16. That ranks as the fourth-highest in all of Division I men's basketball behind Houston (93), Duke (91), and UConn (88). Keep in mind Duke and Houston played in last year's Final Four and UConn won the 2024 national championship. Gonzaga has 83 wins over that span.
Â
Not convinced? Maybe this nugget will do it for you.
Â
McNeese's .843 winning percentage over the last three seasons is ranked as the third-best in all of Division I men's hoops behind Houston (.861) and Duke (.843), and ahead of UConn (.830), Gonzaga (.806), Florida (.794), Arizona (.769), and many other national powerhouses.
Â
And just for giggles, let's see how McNeese ranks among other D1 schools in the state.
Â
The closest team to McNeese in terms of total wins and winning percentage is Louisiana Tech with 62 victories and a .713 winning percentage. The rest are as follows: Nicholls (54, .563), Southern (54, .540), Tulane (51, .520), Grambling (47, .456), LSU (46, .474), Southeastern (42, .442), ULL (42, .424), Northwestern State (35, .365), New Orleans (29, .299), and ULM (22, .234).
Â
Results tell the story and numbers don't lie. There's something special that's been brewing in Cowboy Country. Poke Nation, let me reintroduce you to the Bayou Bandits, the Gonzaga of the South.
