LAKE CHARLES –
Hayden Stringfellow has become a walk-off legend at McNeese.
Â
His one out single to centerfield in the bottom of the 11
th inning scored
Larry Edwards Jr. to lift the Cowboys to an 8-7 win over Southeastern and capturing the Southland Conference series. McNeese will go for the sweep on Sunday at 1 p.m.
Â
The win was the third straight for the Cowboys as they improve to 12-10 overall and 6-5 in league play. Southeastern fell to 12-11 and 4-4.
Â
Stringfellow, who subbed in as a pinch-hitter in the bottom of the ninth with the score tied 7-7 after the Lions scored the tying run with two outs in the top of the inning, slapped a 1-2 pitch into the CF gap for the win. He hit a walk-off single in the season opener to give McNeese a 9-8, 11-inning win over Sam Houston.
Â
In the 11
th on Saturday, Edwards Jr. led off the inning with a single to left field then advanced to second on a groundout. The Lions intentionally walked
DJ Pinkerton to put runners at first and second then the duo completed a double steal to place them on second and third. That set up Stringfellow for the game-winning hit.
Â
Parker Morgan (1-0) got the win in relief effort after he pitched a perfect 11
th inning and striking out two.
Elliott Burrows got the Cowboys out of a ninth inning jam after the Lions scored the tying run and had the bases loaded. Burrows entered and struck out the next batter to leave the runners stranded. The freshman then got through the 10
th with no damage done.
Â
McNeese finished with 13 hits in the game, led by
Matt Stancliff's 4-for-5 showing with two runs scored.
Danny Barbero went 3-for-4 with a home run, two RBIs and two runs scored.
Â
Southeastern got out to a quick start with two first inning home runs. Ben Robichaux started things with a lead-off homer on the game's first pitch. Peyton Woods followed with a two-run, one-out home run over the right field wall to give the Lions an early 3-0 lead.
Â
Barbero put McNeese on the board in the bottom of the first with a two-run, one-out home run to cut the deficit to 3-2.
Â
SLU added two more in the top of the second off Robichaux's second home run of the day to make it 5-2. McNeese got one back in the bottom of the frame when
DJ Pinkerton led off with a double and later scored on a wild pitch to make it a 5-3 game.
Â
McNeese tied the game at 6-6 with two runs in the bottom of the fifth on three straight singles and a sacrifice fly. Stancliff led things off with a single to right and advanced to third on a Barbero single.
Marcus Heusohn's suicide squeeze bunt single scored Stancliff then a
Viggo Lopez sacrifice fly scored Barbero to tie up the game. Three batters later,
Connor Schneider gave the Cowboys a 7-6 lead with an RBI single to right field to score Heusohn.
Â
The Lions tied the game in the ninth with a two-out rally that saw them load the bases then score the tying run on a walk.
