LAKE CHARLES – McNeese baseball used a late offensive surge to defeat Grambling 7–3 in a midweek match up Tuesday night at Joe Miller Ballpark.
The Cowboys improve to 20–17 overall and 9–9 in Southland Conference play, while Grambling falls to 11–24 overall and 8–7 in SWAC action. McNeese returns to conference play this weekend with a three-game series at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi beginning Friday at 7 p.m.
Grambling opened the scoring in the third inning when Aidan Lopez reached on a fielding error, allowing Nicholas Jackson Jr. to score for a 1–0 lead. The Tigers added another run later in the inning when Dillon Braxton scored on a wild pitch.
Grambling extended its lead to 3–0 in the sixth inning as Cameron Hill crossed the plate on a wild pitch.
McNeese responded in the bottom of the sixth inning. Danny Barbero scored on a sacrifice fly by Marcus Heusohn before Isaiah Keller delivered an RBI double down the right field line. A subsequent run in the inning tied the game at 3–3 heading into the seventh.
The Cowboys took control in the seventh inning. Connor Walker led off with a solo home run, his fourth of the season, to give McNeese its first lead of the game. Hayden Stringfellow followed with a two-RBI double to extend the advantage, and DJ Pinkerton added an RBI double to cap the scoring at 7–3.
Jake Blackwell earned the win in relief to improve to 5–0 on the season after tossing one inning.
Grambling reliever Kejuan Burnett was charged with the loss after allowing three runs on one hit.
