COLLEGE STAION, Texas—McNeese softball fought until the last out against UConn Saturday in its 5-1 elimination game loss at the NCAA Regional Tournament, ending its season with a 40-22 overall record.
UConn's Jessica Walter tossed a one-hitter in the win to improve to 9-8 with the win.
McNeese senior Jada Munoz spoiled Walter's no-hitter in the sixth inning with a solo homerun for the only Cowgirl hit and run of the game.
After three perfect innings by Cowgirl starter
Maddie Taylor, UConn scored three runs on four hits in the fourth inning including a leadoff solo homerun by Cat Petteys to break a scoreless game. The Huskies added two more runs on a two-run double by Bella Cruz.
The Huskies scored two more runs in the top of the seventh courtesy of Petteys' second homerun of the game, a two-run homer for a 5-1 lead.
McNeese didn't go down without a fight as the Cowgirls had the bases loaded with one out and at the part of the lineup where a homerun could tie the game, but Munoz popped out to the shortstop for the second out and
Maddie Taylor went down looking to end the game.
Taylor took the loss, ending the season with a 17-6 overall record.
