LAKE CHARLES - Two days following McNeese's first scrimmage of fall camp, head coach Matt Viator put an emphasis on getting in better shape while focusing on situational scenarios this week heading into this coming Saturday night's final preseason scrimmage.
 
"It was about what I thought," he said of the scrimmage. "I thought we started real fast on defense and did some really good things. But we're not quite in good a shape yet, but started out really good.
 
"Offensively was just a hit and miss day. We had some really good plays but too many busts, which that's the nature of offense. I was really pleased with out kickers. The fact that we made both of them in the overtime including a 50-yarder.
 
"We came out of it pretty clean injury-wise."
 
The running back corps rushed for over 300 yards in the scrimmage, led by newcomer Omiri Wiggins with 80 yards on 11 carries while Hutch Swilley added 67 yards on 11 carries. Quarterback Jake Strong threw two touchdowns and Devin Lippold added one score.
 
On defense, the Cowboys unofficially sacked the quarterback nine times, three by RJ Staten and two from Sean Dubose while Mason Edwards and Jermaine Hargraves each picked off a pass.
 
McNeese will focus heavily on situation scenarios this week.
 
"It's a huge situation week for us," said Viator. "We started today doing a lot of tempo-type stuff for the offense and defense. We worked a lot of two-minute and worked in some four-minute goal line, and the scrimmage will dictate that. It's going to be a lot of situations to get all that stuff on tape and get it corrected so we're ready to play in a game."
 
Saturday is Fan Fest which carries a 6 p.m. start in Navarre Stadium. The free event will include the final preseason scrimmage, food vendors, face painting, post-scrimmage field access, and autographs.
