VICKSBURG, Miss. – The
Alexsis Cable coaching era of McNeese Cowgirl soccer kicked off the season with 2-1 victory over Alcorn State during Thursday morning's season opener.
"Opening the season with a win is something we're really proud of, especially with the way our team competed through the heat and adversity today," said Cable. "To get my first win as a head coach is definitely special, but I'm much prouder of the players and the hard work they've put in to get us to this point. They've bought in from day one, and this is a great first step for this team. I'm excited to keep building from here."
The Cowgirls scored their two goals less than a minute apart in the first half with the first goal being netted in the 32
ndminute by
Emma Korhonen for her first NCAA DI goal of her career with
Ella Grace Davis being credited with her first collegiate assist to put the Cowgirls up 1-0.
Within less than a minute, in the 33
rd minute of play,
Emma Korhonen brought the ball up the pitch and passed it to
Gabbi Barusic who found the back of the net for her first collegiate goal to put the Cowgirls up 2-0 heading into halftime.
The Braves would find the back of the net in the 70
th minute of play when Grace Ambrose would connect with Elive Larissa Joso Luma to cut the Cowgirls lead in half.
