FRISCO, Texas - McNeese Senior linebacker Landon Barrett has been named this week's Southland Conference Defensive Player of the Week and also honorable mention for the Stats Perform national defensive honor.

Barrett recorded his first career pass interception against East Texas A&M on Saturday which led to a McNeese touchdown. He finished the game with a game and season-high 11 tackles.

On the season, Barrett tops the team with 31 total tackles and is second with three tackles for a loss.

It's the first player of the week honor in his career and the second honor for a Cowboy this season. Devin Lippold earned the offensive award following McNeese's Sept. 5 win over Texas Wesleyan.

The Cowboys (2-3, 1-2 SLC) are coming off a 27-24 win over East Texas A&M on Saturday night and will next travel to face 11th-ranked LSU this Saturday at 6:45 on the SEC Network. LSU is the second-highest ranked FBS opponent for McNeese in school history. In 2000, the Miami Hurricanes were ranked No. 5 when opening up the season against the Cowboys.

Saturday's game will be the fourth scheduled contest between McNeese and LSU, the most of any for a Southland Conference and Louisiana FCS program. The two are scheduled to meet again in 2029. LSU holds a 2-0 lead in the series (the 2015 game was canceled due to the weather 10 plays into the game). The Tigers beat McNeese 34-7 the last time the two played in 2021.Southeastern Louisiana's Chad Elzy was named the league's offensive player of the week while Lamar's Caleb Holmes garnered special teams honors.
