Athletic Study Lab
The Athletics Study Lab was established to assist student-athletes in their efforts toward educational attainment and graduation. Recognizing the additional expectation in being a student and an athlete, the office seeks to help students develop appropriate skills which will allow them to maximize their academic potential while members of intercollegiate athletic teams. Accurate record keeping, charting of academic progress and NCAA rules compliance will also be monitored. However, the ultimate responsibility for athletic eligibility rests with the student-athletes and their respective coach.
The Academic Counselor for Student-Athletes serves as a liaison between the Athletics Department and all University staff, faculty and personnel regarding concerns and procedures. All academic services provided by the Athletics Department shall be in total compliance with our institutional responsibility as it relates to Conference and NCAA rules, regulations, agreements, precedents, and published interpretations.
The Athletic Study Lab Coordinator works in the Study Lab to ensure that all university rules are maintained in the lab at all times and to provide a structured environment that is condusive to everyone's learning.
Who is required to attend Study Lab?
While the Study Lab may be used by any student-athlete during business hours (Monday-Thursday 8:00 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday 8:00 a.m. -1:00 p.m., and Sunday 4:00 p.m.- 9:00 p.m. during the school year and Monday-Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. during the summer), at-risk student-athletes are required to attend study lab. At-risk students are defined as any student who is an incoming freshman, has below a 2.3 GPA, earned 6 or fewer hours in the previous semester, or who is assigned mandatory study lab by the Academic Counselor or the Athletic Study Lab Coordinator. Those students are required to attend study lab for a number of hours that are agreed upon by their Head Coach, the Academic Counselor, and the Study Lab Coordinator.
Study Lab Rules
1. No Talking on the Phone – Students who do will be asked to leave and his or her coach notified.
2. No Texting
3. No Food or Drinks at the Computers.
4. Be quiet and courteous to others.
5. If you are taking a quiz, NO TALKING.
If Someone else is taking a quiz, NO TALKING TO THEM.
6. Keep your music turned down. No one else should be able to hear it.
7. Find something to study or the Athletic Study Lab Coordinator will help you find something.
8. Save your work to a FlashDrive or email it to yourself – Computers will automatically delete files when turned off for the night.
9. Proper attire must be worn – shirt, pants, ect.
10. No Tobacco of any form in the facilities.
11. Push your chair in when you leave.
12. Hours must be completed by 1PM Fridays.
Tutoring
Math tutoring will be provided one night a week by Mr. Alcock in the Doland Fieldhouse. Please check with Mrs. Andrea for the time and room number if you would like to attend. This tutoring session does count for time in the lab. Studends may also receive help with papers in the Write to Excellence Center and with Math and Science Courses at the Kirkman Tutoring Center. If a student needs a tutor for another, upper level class, then they will need to have their Coach send the Tutor request form to the Academic Counselor.
