Veteran McNeese coach Lark Hebert is in his 16th year on the McNeese staff and the second straight as the defensive line coach after serving the previous 14 years as the linebacker’s lead man.
Hebert was a four-year letterman for the Cowboys during his playing career, participating as both an offensive and defensive lineman.Â
After his freshman season, he was moved to the offensive side of the ball where he started the next three years on the offensive line, blocking for Hall of Fame running back Buford Jordan.
He earned second team all-Southland Conference and all-Louisiana honors during his time as well as being named a preseason all-American prior to his senior season.Â
Last season, defensive linemen Jammerio Gross-Whitaker and Chris Livings combined for 15.5 of the team’s 23 total sacks and 27 of the64 tackles for loss. Gross-Whitaker went on to earn second team all-conference honors.
In 2015, his linebacker corps of Bo Brown and Ashari Goins were two of the most physical in the league. The two tied for the team lead with four sacks each while Goins ranked second on the team with 62 total tackles as Brown added 51. Brown garnered first team all-conference honors - the third straight year he was recognized on the postseason team - while Goins was named to the all-SLC second team.
Combined, McNeese’s linebackers combined for 8.5 of the team’s 27 total sacks and 20.5 of the 73 tackles for loss.
In 2014, Hebert coached a linebacker group that posted 7 sacks and 19 1/2 tackles for a loss. Bo Brown led the group with 43 total tackles on the season to go along with five tackles for a loss and a half sack on his way to all-conference honors. Wallace Scott led the unit with 3 1/2 sacks while freshman Goins posted two sacks. Â
During his tenure he helped coach Roderick Royal to all-America honors in both the 2002 and 2003 seasons while also coaching 19 all-Southland Conference selections, including nine on the first team.Â
As a prep coach, Hebert served as head coach at Sulphur High, Beau Chene High and Elton High. Three times his teams won a district title and he compiled an overall 53-35 won-lost record. Twice his teams posted 10-2 marks, once at Elton and again at Sulphur, and he was named a district coach of the year (twice) and parish coach of the year. Â
As a player, was a three-year starter for the Cowboys from 1983-85 after being moved over from the defensive side the ball following his 1982 freshman season. Earned all-conference and all-Louisiana honors while blocking for Hall of Fame running back and Cowboy legend Buford Jordan. Â
