Wayne Cordova

Wayne Cordova

Wayne Cordova, a standout linebacker for McNeese from 1996-99, is in his second year on staff and will coach the defensive backfield.

In 2017, he coached the Buck Safeties that included first team all-conference selection Dominique Hill, as well as handling the Director of Football Operations duties.

Cordova was a member of the 1997 National Championship Runner-Up team and helped the Cowboys win the 1997 SLC championship while making two playoff appearances.

He spent the 2016 season at Newman High School where he was the defensive coordinator, and prior to that, was on the Tulane Green Wave staff for two years as the Director of Player Personnel-External Relations.

A native of the seventh ward, Cordova previously served as the head coach at St. Augustine (2006-2008) and served as an assistant coach at Destrehan (2012-2013) and Brother Martin (2009-2011). Cordova was serving as the Director of Player Personnel at Grambling (2013) when Curtis Johnson hired him at Tulane.

As a player, Cordova earned first team all-conference honors as a senior in 1999 and was named a team captain that same year. In addition, he was named the team’s Johnnnie Caldarera Defensive Player of the Year after posting 113 tackles. He ended his career with 306 total tackles, ranking 11th on the school’s career record list.

Cordova knows river parishes very well and also the Catholic League. He’s also extremely familiar with New Orleans, his hometown.

He has a strong connection to athletes he’s recruited in the past with backgrounds similar to his. Cordova was raised by a father who worked for the sheriff’s office and a mother who worked an office job at Children’s Hospital.

Cordova played at St. Augustine High School, graduating in 1996 before playing college football at McNeese.
