2022 (Redshirt Sophomore):
• Surprised by the coaching staff during the season when awarded a full scholarship for his efforts.
• Appeared in, and started in 10 games.
• 9th on the team with 27 total tackles (17 of those solos).
• Tied for team lead with three fumble recoveries for 31 return yards.
• Career-high 5 tackles (4 solos) at Nicholls on Oct. 22.
• Four pass break-ups on the season.
2021 Spring (Redshirt Freshman):
• Did not record any action.
2020 (Redshirt Freshman):
• No season due to COVID pandemic.
2019 (Freshman):
• Took a redshirt.
Prior to Shepherd:
• A 2019 graduate of Milford Mill Academy where he played football for Reggie White... Picked off eight passes to go along with 30 tackles and a pair of fumble recoveries.
Personal:
• The son of Richard and Erika Akers... His brother, Warren Gatewood Jr was an All-American at Alcorn State... His cousin, Brian Jordan, played football for the Atlanta Falcons and baseball for the Cardinals, Braves, Dodgers, and Rangers... Another cousin, Jadan Blue, is a wide receiver at Temple ... His cousin Damon Hazelton Jr, played at Missouri after playing at Virginia Tech.
