David Dumars

16th Year at McNeese

David Dumars has been a member of the McNeese State coaching staff since the 2000-01 season, having been on staff of three different head coaches.

During his period as an assistant coach he has helped guide the Cowboys to three Southland Conference titles and appearances in the NCAA, NIT, and CollegeInsider.com post season tournaments.

He first came to McNeese as part of Ron Everhart’s staff for the 2000-01 season where he helped coach the Cowboys to the SLC regular season title and an appearance in the NIT. That same year he helped develop McNeese Hall of Famer Demond Mallet into the 2001 SLC Player of the Year.

During his tenure at McNeese, he’s coached two league players of the year (Mallet and Patrick Richard), an AP All-American (Richard), and 22 all-conference selections.

His early career in the coaching profession, however,  was as a football coach, having spent 11 years as an assistant on the staff at Southeast Missouri State.

He played basketball in high school and coached it in high school and is the older brother of former McNeese State all-American and all-pro Joe Dumars who is now president of the Detroit Pistons.

The 58-year old Cowboy coach works with the Cowboy post players and is one of the Southland Conference’s premier recruiters.

He is a former professional football player, having played for the New York Jets in the NFL, for Montreal in the CFL and for Denver and Birmingham in the USFL.  Two years running he was an all-pro selection as a strong safety for Denver, leading the league in pass interceptions with eight and with a return average of 34 yards.

A 1980 graduate of Louisiana-Monroe, Dumars was a standout player for the Warhawks and began his coaching career at Tallulah (LA) High in 1987.

He and his wife Marsha have two children - Davique and LaTasha - and two grandchildren.
