Gabbert was one of the top golfers in McNeese State history, being named the team's MVP in 1988, the same year that he was the runnerup in the race for the Southland Conference individual title.
He was both an all-conference and an all-Louisiana honoree and in 1988 he produced one of the lowest season averages for a Cowboy, a 72.6 mark that lead the league.
After graduating, he became one of the state's top amateur golfers, having won the Lake Charles city title seven times, qualifying and playing in two US Amateurs and in two US mid-amateurs.
He has been a top 10 finisher in the state amateur tournament five times.
