Benjamin Law

Benjamin Law is in his third season as assistant coach of the Cowgirls.  A driven Law wears many hats for the Cowgirls, one as the Cowgirls’ post coach.  Law is in his second season overseeing the posts.

In Law’s short stint with the Cowgirls, Law has been a part of history in the paint and joins an elite group of Cowgirl post coaches, sending only the third Cowgirl to the professional ranks. Cecilia Okoye recently signed a professional contract to play for Widzew Lodz in Poland after spending a year under Law’s guidance and instruction in the paint.

“Ben saw something special in C. He was always fighting for her opportunities and took great pride in her play and development,” said head coach Brooks Donald Williams.

In 2014, Okoye was named second team all-Southland Conference and second team all- Louisiana.

Law also witnessed his former center, Netanya Jones receive recognition on the national stage, being honored as a 2014 Allstate WBCA Good Works Team member. Jones was one of five Division I student-athletes in the country to receive the honor.

Law’s work in the post is only one small piece of the puzzle he brings to the Cowgirl family. Law uses his basketball mind to oversee skill development, scouting and film analysis.

Off the court, Law oversees equipment and assists in recruiting.

Law is the Cowgirls’ academic liaison and has had aided in the pride of Cowgirl academics as the Cowgirls have been honored with four consecutive Southland Conference Student-Athlete of the Year award winners (Ashlyn Baggett 2011, 2012, 2013 and Allison Baggett 2014), two of those under Law’s watch.

Last season, Law and the Cowgirls made their fourth consecutive postseason appearance by taking part in the WBI Tournament for the second straight season.

In 2013, Law helped guide the Cowgirls to their first ever postseason win and an appearance in the WBI Championship game.  While overseeing guard play in his first season, Law coached All-Southland Conference standouts Ashlyn and Caitlyn Baggett.

“Ben has been such an asset for our program.  His knowledge, experience and work ethic are second to none.  He has coached at every level of the game and has a passion for doing things the right way.  We are blessed to have him as an integral part of our program,” said Williams.

Law is a native of Aubrey, Texas and a graduate of Baylor, where he earned both his Bachelor and Masters degree.  He spent three years as the head girls’ coach at Santa Fe High prior to joining the Cowgirl staff.

Law has been involved in postseason play on all levels.  He helped lead Creekview High to five consecutive state playoffs, three Bi-District championships, two Bi-District Finalist and three Area Finalist. Law served as an assistant coach at Memphis from 2000-2002, helping the 2001 team advance to the WNIT.

From 1998-2000, Law served as a basketball operations assistant for the Miami Heat and the WNBA’s Miami Sol.  The Heat won the Atlantic Conference Championship and advanced to the NBA Playoffs in 1999 and 2000.

Law began his coaching career at Mart High School where he spent one season (1996-97) as the boys’ assistant coach.  He helped lead the team to the District Championship, Bi-District and Area Champs as well as Regional Finalist.

Law has coached four C-USA all-conference players including one who was invited to the WNBA pre-draft camp.  He coached McNeese greats Ashlyn and Caitlyn Baggett who were named to the All-Southland Conference team twice.  He coached one McDonald high school All-American nominee and 26 All-District selections.  Law has coached against 15 WNBA first or second round draft picks including the overall #1 pick and coached the only player in NCAA history to record a triple-double without attempting a field goal.
