HUNTSVILLE, Texas – The McNeese women's soccer team seemed to be on its way to a second Southland Conference victory this season with a 2-0 halftime lead until the Cowgirls surrendered four unanswered goals in the second half to Sam Houston State who picked up the 4-2 victory on Sunday.
The loss prevented McNeese (3-6-1, 1-2 SLC) from its first win on the road this season while Sam Houston (3-7, 2-1 SLC) picked up its second straight victory over a league foe.
Freshman
Sierra Sisco opened up the scoring attack for the Cowgirls in the 11
th minute of the first half as she used a long range curling effort to rocket the ball past the keeper and give McNeese a 1-0 lead. The goal was Sisco's second of the season.
The Cowgirls scoring effort continued in the 27
th minute of action as sophomore
Savannah LaRicci tallied her fourth goal of the season on a dribble through several Sam Houston defenders inside the box and tack on another goal to help give the Cowgirls a 2-0 lead.
Junior goalkeeper
Maggie Marks made a huge save at the 28-minute mark on an unsuccessful penalty shot attempted by Sam Houston's Ashley Alonzo.
A quick three-goal attack in a span of five minutes helped shift the momentum in favor of the Bearkats in the second half as Sam Houston used the borage of goals to help take a 3-2 lead over the Cowgirls.
Sam Houston's Allie Johnson struck first as she cut into the lead in the 47
th minute, firing across a goal off a throw in while Ashley Alonzo used a long-range effort to sneak the game-tying goal inside the back post.
Alonzo then gave the Bearkats a 3-2 lead just two minutes later on a flicked pass from Johnson. Sam Houston tacked on another goal towards the end of the match as Johnson took advantage of a McNeese goalkeeper bobbled ball and dribbled around to score and give Sam Houston a 4-2 lead.
LaRicci led the offensive charge with three total shots, all on-target, along with her fourth goal of the season. Senior
Tori Lasiter recorded three shots, two on-target, while five other Cowgirls were credited with a shot.
Sam Houston led in total shots 17-11 while both teams had eight on-goal shots apiece. The Cowgirls led with five corner kicks while the Bearkats used four corner kicks on the day.
McNeese will return to action on Friday, Oct. 3 in Lake Charles as the Cowgirls welcome Texas A&M-Corpus Christi to Cowgirl Field for another Southland Conference match-up. The match is slated to begin at 7 p.m.
