BATON ROUGE – The McNeese women's tennis team fell short in their season opener on Saturday as Southern University picked up a 4-3 victory over the Cowgirls.
 
McNeese (0-1) will be back in action on Sunday as it takes on LSU with first serve slated for a noon start at W.T "Dub" Robinson Stadium in Baton Rouge.
  
The Cowgirls started the match with an early lead after taking two of the three doubles matches. The team Hannah Brett and Julia Kral defeated Southern's Darnesha Moore and Gabrielle Moore 6-3 while the combo of Anastasija Trubich and Vivien Borbely took a 6-4 decision over Kendall Bunch and Morgan Taylor. The Lady Jaguars picked up the default win in the No. 3 spot.
 
McNeese struggled in singles play during the afternoon with only two Cowgirls picking up wins against their opponents. On Court 1, Kral defeated Darnesha Moore 6-2, 6-3. The win was Kral's first career victory in the No. 1 singles spot. Senior Andreea Nenu scored a victory in the fifth spot in three sets with a 2-6, 6-2, 7-5 win against Taylor.
 
Brett was defeated by Southern's Laura Syori in the No. 2 position by a 6-1, 0-6, 6-7 (6) score while Vivien Borbely lost to Gabrielle Moore 6-4, 6-4 in the No. 3 spot. Trubich fell to Amanda Materre 7-6 (2), 6-1 in the fourth spot. The No. 6 position was awarded to the Lady Jaguars by default.
