Malina Sanchez Leads Cowgirls In Five Set Loss To Southeastern La.


LAKE CHARLES—Senior outside hitter Malina Sanchez recorded a career-high 24 kills and a season high 17 digs to lead McNeese in a heartbreaking five set (25-14, 18-25, 23-25, 25-18, 11-15) Southland Conference loss at the hands of Southeastern Louisiana Tuesday night.
 
The loss is the first home setback of the season for the Cowgirls as they fall to 5-13 overall and 2-3 in league play. Southeastern La. improves to 8-10 on the season and evens their conference record to 2-2. The Cowgirls will remain home to host Central Arkansas Thursday in a 7 p.m. match.
 
McNeese opened the match with a 25-14 first set win before falling behind 2-1 with a 25-18 second set loss and a 25-23 third set loss. The Cowgirls bounced back to even the match at two sets apiece with a 25-18 fourth set win to send the match to a deciding fifth set.
 
In the fifth set, both teams traded points and played through six ties before the Lions took the lead for good (9-8) on a Cowgirl error.  After a Sanchez kill cut the Southeastern La. lead to one (11-10). The Lions scored the next three points to extend their lead to 14-10 on a kill by Veronica Turk, another Cowgirl error and a service ace by Brooke Balser. A kill by Sanchez cut the lead to 14-11 but Sarah Friedman's kill put the finishing touches on the Southeastern La. victory.
 
Both teams struggled offensively and committed their share of errors. McNeese committed 28 errors and ended the match with a .113 hitting percent while Southeastern La. committed 29 errors with a .175 hitting percent.
 
Rae Myers joined Sanchez with double-digit kills, ending the match with 11. Adison Giambrone produced her second consecutive 20-dig night Giambrone recorded a career high 23 in the win over Sam Houston State last Saturday. Kelly Graham recorded 40 or more assists for the sixth time this season with a match-high 48 tonight. Bridget Justis and Hailee Showers both picked up 11 digs apiece and Monica Hudgins and Myers provided the blocking up front. Both players ended the match with career highs. Hudgins led the way with nine and Myers with eight.
 
Southeastern La. was led in kills by Landry Bullock's 12, Madi Odom had a team-high 17 digs and Haley Baker dished out 25 assists.
