LAKE CHARLES—The third time was a charm for the McNeese volleyball team Thursday night that played its third consecutive five set match. After suffering a disappointing loss to Southeastern La. on Tuesday, the Cowgirls pulled off an upset of its own with a win over third place Central Arkansas (25-21, 17-25, 23-25, 25-23, 15-12) in comeback fashion. The match consisted of 29 ties and 12 lead changes but in the end it was the Cowgirls who held on for their sixth win of the season to improve to 6-13 overall and 3-3 in the SLC. UCA falls to 9-10 overall and 5-2 in the SLC.
Three Cowgirls recorded double figure kills with
Malina Sanchez leading the way with 17. Freshman
Ebony Lewis was credited with a season high 12 and freshman
Monica Hudgins came away with 10. The Cowgirls put together their best defensive night of the season to rack up a season high 91 digs. Junior
Bridget Justis led five Cowgirls in digs with a season high 29. Also aiding in the defensive effort was
Adison Giambrone and
Hailee Showers with 16 apiece. Sanchez ended the match with 13 and
Kelly Graham picked up 12. Graham also dished out 45 assists.
McNeese came out on fire in the first set and took a 1-0 led with a 25-21 win. The Cowgirls' offense stalled in the second set and UCA went on to win the set 25-17 to even the match at one set apiece. UCA took a 2-1 overall match lead following the break, in the first of three sets that would go back and forth until the end. UCA won the third set 25-23 and McNeese returned the favor with a 25-23 fourth set win to even the match at two sets apiece, sending the match to a deciding fifth set and the Cowgirls' eighth five set match of the season.
The final set went back and forth for the first 12 points until a service error gave the Cowgirls a 7-6 lead and one they wouldn't give up. McNeese extended its lead to 10-6 on back-to-back kills by Sanchez and Lewis aided along with a UCA error. UCA got as close as 12-11 but kills by Graham and Sanchez gave the Cowgirls a 14-12 cushion and match point. Freshman
Shanna Spree put the final touches on the match with her seventh kill of the match to seal the win for McNeese.
McNeese will return to action next Tuesday to host Texas Southern in a 7 p.m. non-conference match.
