Volleyball Picks Up 3-1 Win Over UNO

LAKE CHARLES—The McNeese volleyball team picked up a 3-1 (25-19, 11-25, 25-12, 25-18) Southland Conference win and snapped New Orleans' six match winning streak Tuesday night in a match that could have Southland Conference Tournament seeding implications. The Cowgirls clinched a spot in the eight-team tournament in Conway, Arkansas next week.

McNeese (13-17, 8-7 SLC), who won their second straight match and third in last four, got offensive production from junior Rebecca Korenek who was the only Cowgirls to record double figure kills. The native of El Campo, Texas put down 12 kills and finished the match with an astounding .407 hitting percent off 27 attempts and one error.

The Cowgirls' defense stepped up big to pick up 64 digs, led by 16 from junior libero Bridget Justis. Sophomore defensive specialist Adison Giambrone was credited with 15 and Malina Sanchez picked up 10. The blocking was highlighted by a career high seven from Ebony Lewis. Lewis picked up two solo blocks and five assisted blocks. Rae Myers, Amber Fryer and Korenek all had two apiece.

UNO (18-14, 7-8 SLC) scored the first point of the match but after a kill by Fryer tied it on the next play, McNeese went on a scoring run to take a 10-6 lead. A kill by Korenek gave the Cowgirls a 16-9 lead but four straight points by the Privateers pulled them to within three (16-13). Leading 22-15, McNeese scored its final three points of the set in a Kelly Graham kill, a UNO service error and a kill by Korenek for the final point of the set.

The Privateers responded with a second set 25-11 win that saw UNO hit .433 on 15 kills and two errors. McNeese struggle on offense with a .065 hitting percent and could only muster seven kills on 31 attempts and committed five errors.

Following the break, the Cowgirls got back on track and took a 2-1 lead with a 25-12 third set win behind the serve of Giambrone and Justis and blocks from Lewis and Fryer. The Cowgirls scorched UNO with a .524 hitting percent in the set with 12 kills in 21 attempts and only one error. UNO was held to a .000 hitting percent.

McNeese closed out the match with a fourth set, 25-18 win. UNO took a 2-0 lead on a service ace and a kill b Keke Irby. A UNO service error and a ball handling error tied the set at two apiece. The set would once again get tied at four apiece before McNeese would take the lead for good on a UNO error. The Cowgirls scored seven of the next eight points to take a 12-5 lead behind the serve of Giambrone. McNeese continued to increase its lead and held a 23-12 cushion following a block assists by Lewis and Myers.  For the third straight time in the match, Korenek would put down the final kill of the set to give the Cowgirls the win.

McNeese will conclude its regular season Saturday in a 12:30 p.m. home match against Nicholls. Seniors Malina Sanchez, Kelly Graham and Amber Fryer will be honored following the match.
