Wallace Scott garners AFCA All-American honors

LAKE CHARLES – McNeese free safety Wallace Scott became the first Cowboy football player since 2006 to earn All-American honors by the AFCA, the organization announced on Monday.

The AFCA has selected an all-American team since 1945 and currently selects team in all five of its divisions and what makes these teams so special is that they are the only ones chosen exclusively by the coaches. Also, only one team is selected to make it more prestigious to be named.

Bryan Smith is the last McNeese football player to have earned AFCA All-American honors.

With his award on Monday, Scott has now been named to three all-American teams – STATS, AP, and now AFCA. He's the first Cowboy player to earn a spot on three of the major organization all-American teams since Bryan Smith was a consensus all-American in 2006 when he added a spot on the Walter Camp team.

Scott's selection gives McNeese 13 AFCA All-Americans in school history.

Scott, a native of Weyanoke, was one of the leaders of the Cowboys who finished the regular season with a perfect 10-0 mark and won its league-record 14th championship. The defensive leader helped carry a defensive unit that ranked No. 1 in the Southland Conference this past season in total defense (300.2 ypg), rushing defense (87.4 ypg), and scoring defense (13.2 ppg). McNeese ranked No. 12, 4, and 3 respectively in those categories in the FCS.

The Cowboys also ranked No. 1 in the league and 6th nationally in first downs defense, No. 1 in SLC and 3 in FCS in red zone defense; No. 1 in SLC and 2 FCS in 4th down conversion defense; and No. 1 in SLC and 7 FCS in 3rd down conversion defense.

The three-time conference defensive player of the week finished the season with 59 total tackles with two sacks and 5.5 tackles for a loss. He set a school record with two fumble recoveries for a touchdown in a season and 142 fumble return yards in a season.

Scott and the McNeese defense allowed just three rushing touchdowns in the regular season and allowed one player to break the century mark rushing in a game.

He was named the Southland Conference's Defensive Player of the Year while picking up first team all-conference honors.
