LAKE CHARLES – Desharick Guidry scored 19 of his game-high 21 points in the first half and
Jamaya Burr netted 15 second half points including hitting all four free throws in the final 18 seconds to help McNeese State post a 74-69 win over Southeastern Louisiana Monday night.
The win completed a season sweep over the Lions as the Cowboys improve to 10-14 overall and 4-9 in league play while snapping a three-game losing streak. SLU saw its three-game winning streak end as it fell to 8-17 and 5-7.
"We needed this win," said head coach
Dave Simmons. "Southeastern came in with a lineup change and had shooters in there. They started out hot and we didn't."
SLU hit its first six shots from three-point range and built a 10-point lead midway through the first half before the Cowboys caught fire behind the shooting of Guidry who scored six straight points while a 3-pointer by a newly discovered player in
Lance Potier cut the gap to 1.
Potier, whose 20 minutes of action was the most than his last three games total, scored a career-high 12 points on 4 of 7 shooting including 2 of 4 from long range.
"I think we found us another player," said Simmons. "I tell the kids all the time, be ready to play because you never know when your number will be called. Potier knocked down some big 3s and pulled down some huge rebounds for us."
Guidry, who also recorded his 18
th double-double of the season with 13 rebounds, strung together a second scoring spurt in the first half with seven straight points to help put the Cowboys up 38-34 with 1:22 to play before the Lions scored the final five points to take a 39-38 lead into the locker room.
Guidry was pretty much shutout in the second half, hitting just 1 of 3 shots, but that allowed Burr and
Kevin Hardy to step up and take control. Burr scored on four layups in the second half while Hardy netted all 8 of his points in the final frame.
A Burr layup with 13:13 to play put the Cowboys up 44-43, a lead they would never relinquish. The lead was 5 after another Burr driving layup with 7:26 to play and after SLU cut the margin to 3, Potier knocked down two free throws to build it back up to a five point advantage at 61-56 with 5:54 to go.
The Lions tied it at 66-all following an Onochie Ochie layup with 1:52 to play but Burr and
Shaun Johnson closed the door on the game by hitting all six free throws with under 20 seconds to play.
Ochie scored 12 points for the Lions while Zay Jackson came within one assist of a triple-double as he finished with 15 points, 10 rebounds and 9 assists. Cedric Jenkins led the Lions with 18 points.
McNeese hit 27 of 54 from the field and was 7 of 18 for 39 percent from long range. The Cowboys sank 13 of 20 from the free throw line for 65 percent. SLU hit 24 of 52 for 46 percent, 9 of 24 for 38 percent from three-point range, and 12 of 24 from the line.
The Cowboys held a 38-30 advantage in rebounds and forced SLU into 14 turnovers, scoring 18 points off those miscues.
This is the first time since the 2004-05 season the Cowboys have swept the season series against the Lions.
McNeese will hit the road for its final two games away from Burton Coliseum beginning Saturday at Lamar.
