LAKE CHARLES—McNeese women's basketball will look to continue its rebounding dominance from the past two games when the Cowgirls travel to Conway, Arkansas to take on Central Arkansas Wednesday at 7 p.m.
McNeese (14-10, 8-5 SLC) sits in a fourth place tie in the conference standings with Northwestern Sate and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi with five regular season games remaining. All three teams are one and a half game out of third place.
In the last two games, McNeese has dominated its opponents on the boards by outrebounding them by an average of 13 per game. One of the main reasons is the play of freshman
Frederica Haywood. Haywood has grabbed double figure rebounds in the last three games, averaging 15.3 over that span. The Mound Bayou, Mississippi native pulled down a career high 20 over Southeastern La. last Thursday.
The Cowgirls have two players averaging in double figures. Junior
Allison Baggett and
Jayln Johnson continue to pace McNeese with 16.4 ppg. and 13.0 ppg., respectively. Baggett has scored in double figures in five of the last six games. She also leads the team with an 88.3 free throw percent and a 33.9 three-point percent.
Johnson, who is coming off a double double (13 pts., 11 assist) against Northwestern State. She has scored in double digits in six of the last seven games. Johnson isn't only scoring, she's also dishing out an average of 5.2 assists per game, which ranks her second in the league.
Central Arkansas (14-10, 7-5 SLC) has won four of its last five games including a 58-49 home win over Incarnate Word on Sunday. The Sugar Bears are the Southland's top three-point shooting team with a 34.3 percent and are second with a 71.9 free throw percent.
Brianna Mullins leads UCA and ranks third in the SLC with a 38.9 three-point field goal percent. Mullins along with Maggie Proffitt and Kendara Watts are averaging in double figures. Proffitt is scoring 13.7 ppg., Watts has an 11.2 average and Mullins is pitching in 10.9 ppg. Mullins also leads UCA with 5.3 rebounds.
