Tennis Takes on In-State Foes over the Weekend

LAKE CHARLES – The McNeese State women's tennis team will be back in action this weekend as the Cowgirls will compete in matches against ULM on Friday, Feb. 20 and at Louisiana Tech the next day.

Friday afternoon's contest against ULM is scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m. at the Nancy Hank Tennis Center. The Cowgirls had to postpone their home opener scheduled for last weekend due to inclement weather. Saturday's match in Ruston is scheduled to begin at 1 o'clock.

McNeese (1-4) is eager to step back on the court after nearly two weeks off. The Cowgirls recently defeated Southern Miss for their first Division I victory this season while also competing against some of the top programs in the country such as LSU, Southern Methodist and Tulane.

In singles action, junior Julia Kral leads the way for McNeese with a 3-1 overall mark on the season. Freshman Hannah Brett has posted two singles victories so far this season, including a win against nationally ranked Noel Scott of LSU.

The team of Brett and Kral will look to better their record in doubles action over the weekend having already achieved a 2-1 mark this year.

ULM (4-2) has dropped its last two matches to Southland Conference opponents Nicholls and Stephen F. Austin. The Warhawks are 1-1 on the road and have posted two shutouts this season.

Petra Horakova has posted a 6-0 mark in singles action this season while Jana Duhanova has picked up victories in the latter part of the lineup with a 4-1 record.

Horakova and partner Sophie Rufyikiri are 4-1 in doubles action this season, competing primarily in the No. 1 spot.

Louisiana Tech (1-6) has played through a difficult slate during the early part of the season, competing against three nationally ranked teams. The Lady Techsters only victory this season came at Northwestern State in a 5-2 decision.

Jazmin Britos leads Louisiana Tech in singles victories this season with four in the second position while the combo of Manoela Chiacchio and Taly Merker have posted three wins as the No. 3 doubles team.
