HUNTSVILLE, Texas – The McNeese State women's tennis team soared to another convincing victory on Saturday as the Cowgirls opened up Southland Conference play with a 6-1 drubbing of Sam Houston State.

The win improved McNeese to 5-4 overall and 1-0 in league action while the loss dropped Sam Houston State to a 0-9 overall record and 0-3 mark in SLC play.

The Cowgirls picked up the first point of the match after dominating on the doubles side of play. The No. 1 combo of Klaudia Gawlik and Anastasija Trubich cruised to their third straight victory after defeating the team of Olivia Battye and Karen Martinez 8-1. Hannah Brett and Julia Kral took down Mila Milanovic and Maddie Mortimore 8-3 in the second spot while the point was clinched with the victory of Vivien Borbely and Sarah Jurakova over Caitlin Mitchell and Bailey VanDyke 8-4. The win improves Borbely and Jurakova's team record to 4-0 on the season.

In singles, Gawlik defeated Battye on Court 1 with a 6-3, 6-2 decision for her fifth straight win while Brett took a win in the third spot with a 7-6, 6-3 defeat of Milanovic to improve to 5-3 overall on the year. Borbely picked up her first singles victory of the season after beating VanDyke in three sets 2-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-7). Jurakova also scored her first singles win of the season with a 6-0, 1-6, 6-3 victory in the fifth spot while Trubich rounded out the conference opening win with a 6-3, 6-4 win on Court 6.

The only loss of the day came in the second spot as Kral dropped a tough three-set match that snapped a streak of five consecutive singles victories.

McNeese will be back in action on Sunday as the Cowgirls travel to Beaumont to take on Lamar. First pitch is slated to begin at 1 a.m.
