LAFAYETTE – The McNeese State women's tennis team delivered another dominating performance on the court Saturday as the Cowgirls posted their second straight shutout on the season with a 4-0 decision against Air Force in Lafayette.
The victory improved McNeese to a 4-4 overall mark on the season while the Cowgirls picked up their third straight win of the season. The loss dropped Air Force to 6-3 on the year and also broke a string of five straight victories by the Falcons.
"We are very happy about our win today," said head coach Helen Besovic. Air Force pushed us to play our "A" game and we stepped up to the challenge. We responded with a very strong performance."
A strong day was had by all on the Cowgirl squad with highlights coming from sophomore
Julia Kral who secured her fourth consecutive singles win as well as junior
Klaudia Gawlik who rolled out another solid performance on the court to win her fourth straight contest.
Since teaming up, the combo of sophomore
Vivien Borbely and freshman
Sarah Jurakova have strung together three straight wins in doubles action. Kral and freshman
Hannah Brett improved to team best 4-1 overall mark on the season with their win against the Falcons.
McNeese took the early advantage in doubles with the No. 2 team of Kral and Brett defeating the combo of Lily Forlini and Mary Meyers 6-2 while Borbely and Jurakova secured the first point of the match with a dominating effort against Air Force's Jocelle Rudico and Sierra Stapper.
The top three positions wrapped things up for the Cowgirls in singles action that started with a victory by Kral on Court Two against Meyers in a 6-4, 6-1 decision. Gawlik followed up with a win against Rizvi in the No. 1 spot 6-3, 6-4.
Once again, McNeese used the efforts of a newcomer to help them sweep the match as Brett took control of a well fought match to hang on defeat Chloe Forlini 7-5, 6-3 to clinch the match-winning point. With the win, Brett improved to 4-3 on the season with her second straight decision.
"Hannah showed so much leadership when she clinched the win for us today," said Besovic. "Since she arrived on campus, Hannah has emerged as one of our crucial players this year. Now we are looking forward to making some noise in conference matches next weekend."
The Cowgirls will have to wait just a while longer to get their feet wet in league action. Sunday's scheduled home match with Nicholls was postponed due to the threat of potential rain and now McNeese will host the Colonels on Thursday, March 19 at 2 p.m.
