LAKE CHARLES – A Southland Conference-best 27 student-athletes that carried a 4.0 grade point average for the semester highlights McNeese's total of 113 that were named to the Southland Conference Commissioner's 2015 Spring Academic Honor Roll, the league announced on Wednesday.
The 113 Cowboys and Cowgirls to earn honor roll honors is the second-most in the league behind Incarnate Word's 128 honorees.
In addition to the 27 perfect 4.0 GPA student-athletes, a total of 17 were selected to the league's all-academic teams in their respective sports.
The Cowgirl softball team had 23 student-athletes named to the commissioner's honor roll with five posting a perfect 4.0 GPA. Included in those 23 is freshman catcher Erika Piancastelli who was named the league's player, hitter and freshman of the year and became the first player in school history to garner all-America honors by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA).
The women's track team also put 23 on the honor roll with an amazing 11 that finished the semester with 4.0 GPAs. One of those with the perfect mark is hurdler Lauren Thompson who won a gold medal at the SLC outdoor championships in the 100-meter hurdles and finished third in the long jump and qualified for the NCAA East Preliminary round. Another is sprinter and jumper Simone Johnson (3.78 GPA) who was the league's high point scorer in the outdoor meet and went on to compete in the NCAAs in the 100 meters and long jump, two events she won gold medals at the conference outdoor meet.
The Cowboys' baseball team landed 20 on the honor roll with three posting perfect 4.0 GPAs. Andrew Guillotte, who was recently drafted in the Major League Baseball Draft, posted a 3.76 GPA in health education.
The men's track squad had 16 on the honor roll with two finishing with 4.0 GPAs, including Brock Moreaux who was the conference champion in the 3000-meter steeplechase.
The Cowgirl golf team added 10 to the honor roll as Olivia Hansen and Rebecca Tudor posted a perfect GAP. The women's basketball team added seven to the list including Talisa Boyd who finished with a 4.0 GPA.
