Record-setting day for McNeese Athletics on Saturday

| By:
LAKE CHARLES – Saturday was a record-setting day for McNeese Athletics, one that few schools can say they have achieved.

McNeese sports, six of them who were competing, combined to post an 8-0 record on the day, a first in school history. To make that number more impressive, six of those wins came on the road.

The day got started with the Cowgirls' tennis team opening up Southland Conference play with a 5-2 win at Lamar to improve to 11-1 overall while posting their seventh-straight win.

The Sandy Pokes beach volleyball team completed its Cowgirl Beach Bash with two wins, beating Mary Hardin Baylor and New Orleans, each by 4-1 scores, and improved to 7-1 on the year.

McNeese softball picked up a big doubleheader at Baylor, 5-4 and 6-2, for its third consecutive win over a Power 4 Conference team. The Cowgirls are now 15-6 on the season.

Baseball began Southland Conference play this weekend and on Saturday, won at Nicholls by an 11-4 score for its third straight win and to improve to 2-0 in league play, 5-5 overall.

Men's and women's basketball made it a clean sweep.

The Cowgirls made history in their 73-49 win at New Orleans to improve to 26-4 overall and 20-1 in conference play. It's the most wins in a season in school history while the 20 wins are the most by any team in a season in Southland Conference history. The Cowgirls also extended their school-record winning streak to 19 games, the third-longest current streak in the NCAA.

The Cowboys ended the day with a thrilling 66-63 win at New Orleans. The win was the seventh-straight for McNeese and improved their record to 25-5 overall and 18-3 in conference play.

And if you're keeping score, McNeese's winter and spring sports are combined for an 89-22 won-loss record to date.
