Tennis Dominates in 6-1 Victory Over UTRGV

WACO, Texas – The McNeese State women's team picked up its first victory of the season in dominating fashion Friday morning with a 6-1 drubbing of Texas Rio Grande Valley at the Hawkins Indoor Tennis Center on the campus of Baylor.

With the victory, the Cowgirls moved to 1-1 overall on the season while UTGRV dropped to 0-2 this year. The win was McNeese's first against Texas Rio Grande Valley since the 2004 season.    

McNeese took the doubles point to gain the advantage heading into singles play. The Cowgirls took the match after sweeping the Vaqueros on all three courts. The team of Julia Kral and Giovanna Fioretti scored a 6-2 victory on court two while the No. 1 combo of Klaudia Gawlik and Anastasija Trubich defeated Reegan Greenwood and Dominique Esparza, 6-2. Sarah Jurakova and Hannah Brett completed with sweep with a 6-3 win on court three.

The Cowgirls maintained the momentum from the doubles point by winning five of its singles matches. Individual play was highlighted by sophomore Sarah Jurakova's seventh consecutive singles victory dating back to last season. Jurakova is just one of two players, including Fioretti, who are undefeated in singles play.

Fioretti notched another victory in the third position with a 6-1, 6-1 decision against UTRGV's Natacha Minc while senior Klaudia Gawlik clinched the match for McNeese with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Greenwood at the No. 1 spot. With the win, Gawlik inched closer to reaching the top five all-time singles victories in McNeese history.

Kral picked up the win on Court Two with a 6-2, 6-1 win over UTRGV's Esparza while junior Vivien Borbely was able to grind out a three-set victory over Tara Donaho, 5-7, 6-3, 10-3. Sophomore Hannah Brett suffered the only loss for McNeese in a 6-1, 6-3 decision on Court Four.

The Cowgirls will rest before hitting the road again on SaturdayJan. 23 for a contest at Texas State. The match is slated for a 10 a.m. first serve.
