SAN MARCOS, Texas – The McNeese women's tennis team again flexed its muscle during Saturday's contest against Sun Belt opponent Texas State as the Cowgirls took a convincing 6-1 victory in San Marcos.
The Cowgirls improved to 2-1 on the season after allowing just one point from the other team for the second match in a row. The Bobcats competed in their first contest of the year.
"We played a well executed match today," said McNeese head coach
Helena Besovic. "Texas State is a good team and we knew that we had to play with a lot of energy. I am proud of our performance today."
McNeese started off strong after having picked up the doubles point. The team of
Giovanna Fioretti and
Julia Kral defeated Texas State's combo of Dench and Collins, 6-3 in the second position.
Sarah Jurakova and
Hannah Brett clinched the deciding point on Court Two with a 6-3 decision over Carr and Chia.
Jurakova continued the Cowgirls' dominant effort with a straight set victory in singles action to move her team to a 2-0 lead. She posted a 6-2, 6-0 win over Perez while
Julia Kral's 6-3, 6-0 victory in the No. 2 spot was enough to give McNeese a comfortable cushion.
Senior netter
Klaudia Gawlik clinched the match for McNeese following a competitive bout in the top spot against Rubio. She eased into a 6-2 win in the opening set but battled in the second set eventually taking the match, 7-5.
Vivien Borbely and
Hannah Brett convincingly took control of their respective courts. Borbely picked up a 6-4, 7-5 win while Brett took the fourth spot to three sets in a 2-6, 6-1, 6-0 win.
Freshman
Giovanna Fioretti suffered her first defeat of the season falling to Carr 4-6, 6-1, 10-1 on Court Three.
McNeese fans will have the chance to see their Cowgirl tennis team in action for the first time on Wednesday, Jan. 27 at 4:30 p.m. at the Nancy Hank Tennis Center in Lake Charles.
