LAKE CHARLES – The McNeese women's tennis team found itself on the winning side of a weekend doubleheader Sunday as the Cowgirls defeated Tyler Junior College, 4-3, before posting a shutout victory over Prairie View A&M, 7-0, at the Nancy Hank Tennis Center.
 
McNeese improved its record to 5-3 on the season with the victory over Prairie View A&M (1-7) while the contest against Tyler Junior College (0-2) was classified as an exhibition.
 
In the first contest of the day, senior Klaudia Gawlik was the key in pulling out a 4-3 victory over the 16-time NJCAA National Champion Tyler Junior College. Gawlik battled to three sets but came away with the match point following a 6-0, 4-6, 7-5 battle in the No. 1 spot against Gabby Andrews.
 
Others who scored singles wins against TJC were freshman Giovanna Fioretti, sophomore Sarah Jurakova and junior Vivien Borbely. The team of Julia Kral and Charoline Erlandsson picked up the only doubles win for their team in a 6-4 decision.
 
The Cowgirls dominated in the second match of the day with a decisive 7-0 victory over Prairie View A&M. It was the first shutot victory for the program since blanking Incarnate Word, 7-0, back on March 29, 2015.
 
McNeese clinched the doubles point for the early advantage with wins in the No. 1 and No. 2 courts. Jurakova and Fioretti combined to defeat the Panthers' Stacy Lackey and Neharika Rama 6-0 in the first spot followed by Gawlik and sophomore Hannah Brett who picked up a 6-1 decision over Timara Maxwell and Shaddae Findley in the No. 2 spot.
 
In singles, the Cowgirls were never contested as all six positions were finished in two sets.
 
Kral competed in the first position and defeated Sydney Thomas 6-1, 6-0 for the deciding match point while Jurakova downed Rama in the No. 2 spot 6-0, 6-2.
 
Brett won her battle against Lackey on Court 3 6-1, 6-1 and Borbely picked up a 6-0, 6-0 win over Trinity Randolph. Senior Anastasija Trubich won her first singles match of the season 6-4, 6-0 over Maxwell in the No. 6 position.
 
The Cowgirls will be back in action on Tuesday when they host Louisiana Tech in a mid-week match set for 2 p.m. at the Nancy Hank Tennis Center.
