LAKE CHARLES – The McNeese women's tennis squad dropped a heartbreaker in its Mardi Gras match Tuesday afternoon as the Cowgirls were defeated by Louisiana Tech in a 4-2 affair at the Nancy Hank Tennis Center.
 
McNeese dropped to 5-4 on the year while the Lady Techsters improved to a 4-1 mark this season. The loss was the first for the Cowgirls at home this season.
 
Louisiana Tech grabbed the early advantage by gaining the doubles points with wins on Courts 1 and 3. The team of Klaudia Gawlik and Hannah Brett were not able to finish their match due to the Lady Techsters clinching the match point.
 
In singles, sophomore Hannah Brett evened the score with a victory in the No. 5 spot as she defeated Manoela Chiacchio 6-2, 6-4 shortly before Jazmin Britos handed Giovanna Fioretti a loss in the No. 2 spot and give Louisiana Tech a 2-1 lead.
 
Alexandra Starkova pushed the lead to 3-1 over the Cowgirl after defeating Klaudia Gawlik in the top singles spot 6-2, 6-3. Junior Julia Kral pulled McNeese to within one point of the Lady Techsters with a victory in the third spot over Zoe Chen 6-4, 6-3.
 
Alba Escalona Perny clinched the victory for Louisiana Tech with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Vivien Borbely in the sixth spot.
 
Sarah Jurakova's singles bout went unfinished after the match point was clinched.
 
The Cowgirls will be back in action next weekend when they head to Central Arkansas for a neutral site battle with Missouri State on Saturday, Feb. 13 before battling the Sugar Bears in Southland Conference action the next day.
