LAKE CHARLES – The McNeese women's tennis team return to action this weekend as the Cowgirls get set to host a pair of key Southland Conference matchups at the Nancy Hank Tennis Center.
McNeese will play host to Sam Houston State on Saturday beginning at 11 a.m. before turning around on Sunday with a contest against Lamar, which is set to begin at Noon.
Fans in attendance will be able to indulge this weekend with the team providing Jimmy John's sandwiches on Saturday and pizza on Sunday. There will also be refreshments available each day.
The Cowgirls (9-4, 2-0 SLC) have been on a roll lately with four consecutive victories, two of which have come against league opponents. McNeese took down last year's SLC regular season champion Nicholls, 7-0, to remain one of the top squads in the league.
Four Pokes on the roster have won three or more consecutive singles matches led by junior
Julia Kral who has posted seven in a row. Together, the Cowgirls are a combined 56-21 in singles play, the best mark in the conference. Sophomore
Hannah Brett currently leads the team with 10 wins on the season.
Sam Houston State (5-5, 0-2 SLC) has been downed in its last two conference matchups, falling to Southeastern Louisiana and New Orleans. The Bearkats are led by Maddie Mortimore who has nine singles win son the year.
Lamar (2-4, 0-2 SLC) also fell to Southeastern Louisiana and New Orleans over the weekend and will ride a three-match drought into a match with Nicholls Saturday followed by its contest with McNeese on Sunday. The Cardinals are led in singles action by top netter Andrea Ivanovic, who has captured two victories this season.
Following this weekend's contests, the Cowgirls will continue their homestand with a pair of matches against A&M-Corpus Christi and Incarnate Word next weekend.
